How BookNookExchange works

Buy a book. Seed a donation. Send a story where it's needed.

BNE was born from a divorce, a stack of textbooks nobody wanted at a fair price, and a slow realization: books don't have to sit on a shelf to be finished with someone. Every transaction here does two things at once — moves a book you're ready to release, and quietly seeds a gift toward a reader who's still waiting for their first one.

1

Browse & buy

A community-run marketplace with fair prices, honest photos, and no listing-fee premium. Every book carries its previous owner's optional note forward.

2

Seed a donation

At checkout, add any amount to help send a book to a reader in an underserved community. One quiet checkbox. Every seed publicly counted.

3

Send it forward

When you're done, relist it, donate it, or ship it directly to a BNE Foundation chapter — one tap, one more life the book gets to open.

The BookNookExchange difference

Every book has a story. Now it travels with one.

Used-book marketplaces treat every copy as inventory. BookNookExchange treats each one as a hand-off between readers who loved it — with a real trail of who touched it and why.

When you list a book, you can leave a single-line note for the next reader: what stayed with you, what to skip, what to read after. When you buy, you inherit that lineage.

  • Owner Notes. Every book carries an optional 1-line farewell from its previous reader — a living lineage, not a barcode.
  • Reader Trail. See how many readers a copy has passed through, and where. Some editions have crossed a dozen homes.
  • Real Condition, Real Photos. No stock images. What you see is what you get — dog-ears, marginalia, cracked spines and all.
  • Send-Forward, not Sell. One-tap donate to a BNE Foundation chapter — the book keeps living, on a shelf that needs it.

The BNE Foundation

A chapter in every state.
A shelf on every corner.

BookNookExchange is a new kind of bookstore — not competing with the big box chains, but building the segment they never served: a marketplace where every book carries a story, and a Foundation that puts the ones nobody wants where they're needed most.

The mission (draft — board pending)

Fund literacy where the market forgot to look.

Every marketplace fee contributes 5% to the BNE Foundation. That money — combined with donated books from Send-Forward listings — goes directly to state chapters that partner with local schools, hospitals, shelters, correctional facilities, and rural libraries.

Locally led

Each state chapter is run by volunteers who know their communities — librarians, teachers, formerly incarcerated readers, retirees, students.

Books, not budgets

Chapters receive donated books directly from the marketplace — no middlemen, no warehousing costs, no waste.

Full transparency

Every quarter, every chapter publishes: books received, books distributed, partners served, and dollars spent — auditable, open.

The 50-state horizon

Our long-view goal: an operating chapter in every U.S. state, plus DC, Puerto Rico, and tribal partners \u2014 ten years, patient and community-led.

A patient ten-year build

We're not rushing this. Each chapter opens only when a locally led team is ready to run it well. The 50-state horizon is a north star, not a race.
